Abstract

It is really shocking to read that incoming chairman and managing director of India's premier BANK said that he would give stress on consolidation of the bank's position in retail banking and maintain focus on its key segments such as corporate and international banking. If that remains the main strategy of the Bank why talk of inclusive growth and opening of rural branches and empowering these with better technology and trained personnel to outreach remotest corner to serve the most poorly served farmers and artisans. It is indeed surprising that despite growing nonperforming assets Indian banks are still hovering under the cloud that city banking is painless and profitable.
