Abstract

Tourism activity has long lasting socio-economic impacts on the host economy and community. The employment impact of tourism goes beyond employment in sectors such as hotels, restaurants and airlines in which tourists directly spend their money. The establishments which receive tourists also buy goods and services from other sectors that generate employment in those sectors through multiplier effect. Recruiting and selecting the right people, improving their knowledge, skill and competency by imparting proper training and retaining the employees, are of paramount importance to the continued success of tourism industry. Organisational excellence can be achieved by enhancing performance of people. The focus of excellence through people is to look at their people as a key source of competitive advantage. It has been seen that tourism and hospitality industries in Odisha have not adopted any system or practice of staff recruitment, but follow their own preferred methods. In other words, the recruitment method is subjective and biased. Despite this, they are happy with the current staff profile.
