In this study, we investigated the potential role of emotional intelligence (EI) in job performance. A sample of 131 employees of different Departments of the Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC) underwent a psychological test, which included measures of EI and its effect on job performance. Consequent to the reform in power sector in Odisha, the OHPC was incorporated on 21 April 1995 under the Companies Act 1956. The results of the study demonstrated support for a proposed model of the relationship between EI and job performance. Specifically, EI was found to be a significant predictor of the job performance, which in turn was a significant predictor. These results have important implications with regard to our current understanding of the relationships between EI and job performance. We emphasise the need to incorporate the constructs of EI and job performance into a broader, explanatory personality framework.
