Abstract

Stem cells are currently used in the treatment of several life threatening disease and plays an important role in the treatment of many medical conditions like blood disorders, cancers, immune disorders and metabolic disorders. The cord blood and cord tissue has become increasingly recognised source of stem cells that can be used in cell therapy. Stem cells has unique advantage particularly in children and can be lifesaving in rare cases. In certain instances, there are some medical issues around using one's cord blood cells as well as availability of cells which will require treatments done using cells from other donors with the vast majority being unrelated donors. However, the studies have shown that there is a possibility of matching and can also be used for siblings and other members of family who have matching tissue type. A study to assess the awareness regarding stem cell banking (umbilical cord and cord blood) in maternity hospitals of Hubli. Primary sources of data collection are interaction with the centre head and area sales manager and expected prospects in the hospitals under the project ‘Ayushmaan Bhava Awareness study of stem cells Hubli’ with judgmental sampling. The data collection method and interaction was with only expected prospects (pregnant women's). Findings:From the awareness point of view, parents are showing interest to preserve stem cells. The urban people are showing more interest in preserving stem cells, hence, there is a need of more awareness programme of stem cells for public.
