Training is the most important factor in the business world, nowadays as training increases the efficiency and the effectiveness of both employees and the organisation. Training has been accepted as an important factor in improving employee performance. It enhances the capabilities of employees. Training has the distinct role in the achievement of an organisational goal by incorporating the interests of organisation. The higher education system in India contributes to the national development through dissemination of specialised knowledge and skill. Training also plays a vital role in the higher education system for overall development of the manpower and keeping themselves updated with latest development in organisational practices. University is one of such institution coming under higher education system. This paper deals with an Indian university as a case study, that is, Utkal University and its training practices. It is primarily an attitude study of the employees towards the various training programmes conducted by the UGC-Human Resource Development Centre (erstwhile UGC-Academic Staff College) of the university and to measure the gap (if any) existing between actual and desired training practices. It further examines whether the current training practices is enhancing the performance of the staff of the university to a significant level. Primary data for the current study have been collected from the academic staffs by personal interview and a structured questionnaire containing 13 items explaining training practice. Data were also collected from secondary sources.
