In today's world where technology has gripped our minds, even the thought of investing our heart and soul in our actions without the use of technology makes us scared. Individuals face an everyday tussle between inner self and social self, especially at their workplace which is supposed to be a major component of their social identity. In this ever changing scenario, meeting to the employee needs and keeping them attached to their work and utilising their full potential is a challenge for the organisations. It is seen that sense of belongingness, experience of participation and recognition motivates the employees to work effectively. Organisations should work in this area and provide opportunities for employees where they can feel valued and be engaged in their work. It is also important to determine their engagement levels and its contribution to the overall work effectiveness as well as building an ethical and strong work environment. Success stories of flourishing business organisations have been widely studied on the contributions made by engaged employees. The present article is a review of the work done by various researches in the field of employee engagement that helps to provide a better picture and understanding of the term employee engagement.
