Ease of doing business -polishing the runway for entrepreneurship

Abstract

“Make in India” campaign was introduced by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi on 25thSeptember, 2014 to elevate the performance of manufacturing sector in India. The focus was on encouraging both domestic and multi national corporations to carry out their production processes within the country. For enabling the businesses to be carried out with great ease, easy and effective governance has been assured by bringing reformation in existing complex labour laws. The contribution of manufacturing sector will be increased from 16% to 25% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by the year 2025 and will be led by Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Numerous steps have been initiated to attract foreign direct investment in India and to make it a manufacturing hub like easing the regulations, building the best infrastructure, reforming the labour laws, implementing intellectual property rights and developing the manufacturing sector. Despite all these measures, India is still lagging behind from other countries of the world in ease of doing business index. As per World Bank latest Doing Business Report (DBR, 2019), India is 77thrank among 190 countries. This Study aims to understand Ease Of doing business index (EODB), its parameters, importance, challenges and probable solutions to deal with them.
