Abstract

Community Based Rural Tourism (CBRT) is a strategic venture suitable for many protected areas, aimed to enhance the livelihood and empowerment of local people residing near to those areas. It is one of the most dynamic sectors of the tourism industry and its principle is focused on benefits of tourism derived by the local people and environment while minimizing the negative impacts. Conservation of environment and socio-economic, cultural development of local communities are an indispensable part of community based rural tourism. The present study initiated by the author is to unfold the socio- cultural impact of community based rural tourism upon the locals near to the Kumbalangi- Kumarakom-Thekkady Circuit of Kerala. Also this study envisages the active participation of the community in various tourism ventures that has paved the way for an inclusive development of the locals, environmental conservation and biodiversity protection of the piloted areas.
