Abstract

Rural tourism has emerged as a promising avenue for fostering economic development, cultural preservation, and community well-being in rural areas. This paper explores the interconnected roles of rural tourism, entrepreneurship, and the empowerment of rural women, emphasizing their potential to drive sustainable development. Women in rural areas often face socio-economic challenges, including limited access to education, financial resources, and decisionmaking platforms. However, their active participation in tourism-related entrepreneurial activities can transform them into agents of change, promoting self-reliance and community growth. Using a mixed-methods approach, this study examines case studies and primary data from rural communities engaged in tourism activities. The findings highlight that women-led entrepreneurial ventures, such as home-stays, handicrafts, culinary experiences, and cultural performances, significantly contribute to the local economy. Moreover, rural tourism provides a platform for showcasing traditional crafts, cuisines, and heritage, creating unique opportunities for women to generate income while preserving their cultural identity. The study also identifies barriers to women’s participation in rural tourism, including patriarchal norms, lack of training, and limited market access. To address these challenges, the research advocates for targeted interventions such as capacity-building programs, microfinance opportunities, and inclusive policy frameworks. Partnerships between governments, NGOs, and private stakeholders are essential to create a supportive ecosystem that encourages women entrepreneurs in the tourism sector. By linking rural tourism with women’s entrepreneurship, this paper underscores its potential to achieve economic empowerment, gender equality, and sustainable rural development. Promoting women’s active participation in tourism not only enhances their socioeconomic conditions but also strengthens rural communities, fostering resilience and inclusivity. The study concludes with recommendations for leveraging rural tourism as a transformative tool for empowering rural women and ensuring sustainable growth.
