Abstract

Ancient Indian mathematical systems, particularly those found in the Vedic Sutras, offer efficient mental computation techniques with deep algorithmic insight. These sutras, codified by Bharati Krishna Tirthaji in the early 20th century, present concise formulae that can be reinterpreted in the framework of modern computational theory. This paper explores the translation of selected Vedic Sutras into modern programming logic using Python and Java. We focus on three widely studied sutras—Urdhva-Tiryagbhyam (vertical and crosswise), Nikhilam Navatashcaramam Dashatah (all from 9 and the last from 10), and Paravartya Yojayet (transpose and adjust). We provide algorithms, code implementations, and a comparative analysis with conventional algorithms in terms of efficiency and complexity. This work highlights the value of Indian Knowledge Systems in global computational paradigms and proposes their integration into algorithmic education to enhance mathematical and computational thinking.
