The present study examines the state of employment for LIS professionals in government organisations in India. Data collected from the National Employment News, published weekly from 1994 to 2000 has been analysed to find the demand of library professionals in the country. The study reveals that a total of 978 No. Of vacancies were notified in the past seven years, with the highest (22%) in 1997 and the lowest 8% in the year 2000. The study also indicates that there is more demand of low salaried professionals (LSP) ie 82% as compared to only 18% high level executive post.
