Abstract

The ability of an individual to identify and understand the emotional clues in self and those on others is called Emotional Intelligence (EI). EI has became the requirement of time for service sector organizations in particular and other organizations in general. EI as set of abilities can be used as a tool for improving performance in the work place as well as a source of energy for better understanding of interpersonal and intra-personal abilities. The purpose of the current study is to examine the relationship between age and emotional intelligence among bank employees. In order to conduct the study a standardized questionnaires was used. Data was collected randomly from 100 selected bank employees who are working in both public and private sector banks. Emotional intelligence was measured through the scale developed by Schutte.et.al (1998) containing 33 items. Emotional intelligence was identified as the dependent variable and age was regarded as the independent variable along with that employee's gender, educational qualification, marital status, income, and experience were considered as the moderating factors. Data was statistically analyzed by using SPSS. Results indicated that the level of emotional intelligence among bank employees is average and there exist statistically insignificant relationship between age and EI. Other demographic factors have very low and moderating effects on the relationship between age and EI which was statistically insignificant. Therefore it can be concluded there does not exist relationship between age and EI to determine competency of the bank employees.
