Abstract

The efficacy of three diagnostic tests viz., faecal smear examination (concentration method), rectal pinch examination and faecal polymerase chain reaction for IS-900 was evaluated in 100 goats. The prevalence of the disease was observed to be 34, 5 and 8% by faecal smear examination, rectal pinch examination and faecal PCR, respectively. Prevalence was 38% on combining the results of all the three diagnostic tests. Faecal smear examination, rectal pinch examination and faecal PCR were 89.5, 13.2 and 21.2% sensitive, respectively. Feacal smear examination appeared to be rapid, cheap and reliable test for screening both clinical and sub-clinical cases of paratuberculosis under field conditions.
