Abstract

The present study deals with the assessment of fecundity of Schizothorax curvifrons collected from the river Jhelum, Kashmir. A total of 15 female fish specimen ranging from 96 to 410 g were studied for estimating the fecundity of S. curvifrons. The results showed that the absolute fecundity varied from 4762 to 17196 ova, while the relative fecundity varied from 23 to 76 ova/g body weight. The average absolute fecundity recorded was 9764 whereas the average relative fecundity was 43. The relationship of fecundity with the parameters of total length, total weight and ovary weight were found to be linear and the value of correlation coefficient (R2) was estimated at 0.68, 0.67and 0.55, respectively, indicating positive correlation.
