Abstract

A prototype of a bicycle powered portable irrigation pump was designed, fabricated and tested. The equipment was specifically developed for use in rural areas having marginal land holding and inaccessibility of electricity. The Bicycle powered pump was able to pump up to 5m pumping head and achieved flow rates above 35 1/min. Its main advantage over existing technology is its mobility which means that it is suitable for irrigating the farm lands of uneven terrains and areas where canal irrigation is impossible.
