Genetic structure of six populations of Nemipterus japonicus from Veraval (Gujarat), Ratnagiri (Maharashtra), Mumbai (Maharashtra), Panaji (Goa), Malpae (Karnataka) and Kochin (Kerala) in India was studied using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Two selective primers provided distinct and consistent results. The RAPD profiles generated by both primers revealed varying degrees of polymorphism, ranging from 57.92 (primer OPA-01) to 69.01 (primer OPA-09). Nei's genetic diversity (h) among the four populations varied from 0.2680 ± 0.2396 (Veraval population) to 0.4406 ± 0.0537 (Malpe population). Nei's highest genetic distance (0.3168) was observed between Veraval and Panaji populations.
