Fecundity estimates of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum (Salmoniformes: Salmonidae) from Kashmir

Abstract

The study is based on the estimation of absolute fecundity and relative fecundity of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) collected from three stateowned trout farms namely Mammar Trout Farm, Dachigam Trout Farm and Achabal Trout Farm. The highest value of absolute fecundity was estimated at 2600 eggs for a fish of 269 mm total length (239.50g) with a gonad length of 135 mm (45.5g) and the lowest value obtained was 1204 eggs for a fish of 273 mm total length (252.00g) and gonad length of 90 mm (14.5g). The relative fecundity ranged between 3.502 to 10.855 per gram of body weight. The mean±SD value of absolute fecundity and relative fecundity recorded were 1746.38±377.86, and 5.86±186, respectively. The scattergram between fecundity against fish weight, fish length, gonad weight and gonad length revealed positive relationship with R² value of 0.599, 0.704, 0.662, 0.559, respectively.
