Doppler haemodynamic effects of thiopentone/propofol/ketamine anaesthesia on renal artery in dogs

Abstract

The study was conducted on 18 adult dogs divided into three equal groups viz. A, B and C. Animals in all the groups were preanaesthetized using same combination of drugs viz. atrpinee, butorphanol and midazolam. Anaesthesia was induced with thiopentone in group. A, propofol in groups B and ketamine in group C. Heart rate and Doppler haemodynamic parameters were recorded before administration of the drugs at 0 minute, after 5 minutes of administration of preanaesthetics and after induction on achieving level of surgical anaesthesia. A significant increased in heart rate was recorded in the groups A and C Peak systolic velocity (PSV), End diastolic velocity (EDV) and Time averaged maximum velocity (TAMV) of the renal artery fluctuated marginally after administration of preanaesthetics and induction agents. However, post induction PSV decreased significantly in group A and C. Resistive Index (RI) and Pulsatility Index (PI) decrease marginally after administration of anaesthetics agents; however, PI decreased significantly in group C. Most of the Doppler haemodynamic parameters fluctuated within normal physiological range. However, propofol alongwith atropine, midazolam and butorphanol premedication was most suitable anaesthetic in dogs as it produced maximum doppler haemodynamic stability.
