Characteristics and quantification of induced-estrus following estradiol-based and ovsynch-based synchronization protocols in Murrah buffalo (Bubalus bubalis)

Abstract

The present study was designed to compare the induced estrus in 36 anaestrus buffaloes subjected either to estradiol-based or ovsynch-based protocols. Animals were divided into two groups, Group I given estradiol + Controlled Internal Drug Release Device (CIDR, n=18) and Group II given Gonadotropin Releasing hormone analogue (GnRH + CIDR, n=18) based protocols. Characteristics of induced-estrus were recorded between days 10 to 12 in Group I and days 8 to 10 in Group II visually and using Closed Circuit Television (CCTV). Observed symptoms of estrus and genital tract changes were scored and average estrus score of every buffalo was then calculated. The estrous symptoms were more pronounced in Group I than Group II but there was no significant difference between their total scores. The first service conception rate (FSCR) was higher in Group I (42%) than Group II (34%) buffaloes.
