Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the age of Common carp (Cyprinus carpio var. communis) from Dal Lake using scales and operculum bones. Fish scales and opercular bones, after processing properly were observed under the microscope and the age of fish was determined by counting the number of annuli or year marks. Total length of the fishes varied from 129–290 mm. Age of fish ranged from 1+ to 3+ years, with length group from 129–194 mm to 230–290 mm. Significant correlation was observed between total weight and total length; total length and age of the fish. The examination of scales for age determination was rather difficult as the annuli were not easily visible on the scale. The rings of growth or annuli were visible on the operculum of Cyprinus carpio var. communis.
