The food sector currently accounts for around 30% of the world's total energy consumption. Several unit operations including food production, processing, transportation, storage, distribution, and marketing exhibit a detrimental impact on the environment. The techniques involved in the said operations create wastes in a substantial quantity that may or may not be hazardous. Such wastes, if not treated, could lead to disposal problems and severe pollution. Further, the effluents generated by the food industry pollute the air, water and land and carry several heavy metals, inorganic contaminates and toxic organic residues. There is a need to enforce emerging mitigation strategies for primary, secondary and tertiary waste management. This review covers state-of-the-art technologies that could be implemented at the industrial scale to remediate the emerging threat of food industry-generated hazardous waste.
