Abstract

Mulberry is a hardy, fast-growing perennial plant belonging to the Moraceae family, genus Morus. Mulberry is a woody, deciduous, and economically valuable tree that is moderately resistant to a variety of environmental stresses (drought, water-logging, salinity, heavy metals etc). Mulberry leaves are used to feed the silkworm, Bombyx mori which produces silk thread. Mulberry trees can grow in a wide range of climates and soil environments, from temperate to subtropical regions in the northern hemisphere to the tropics in the southern hemisphere. Mulberry trees’ positions in the prevention and monitoring of desertification, water and soil conservation, saline-land management, and other issues have gotten renewed interest as people have become more concerned about the state of the environment. Mulberry trees have also been increasingly investigated for their potential as a source of other items other than silkworm food.
