Unveiling topographic impacts on soil texture in mountainous forest landscape of Kashmir

Abstract

This study explores the interactions among soil texture, aspect, and topographic elevation in temperate Himalayan region. The major findings underscore substantial variations in soil texture across the studied locations. Soils at an altitude of 2200-2500 meters exhibits a pronounced prevalence of clay loam texture and soils at an altitude of 1800-2200 meters showcases a loam texture on the Northern aspect. While soils located at an altitude of 2200-2500 and 1800-2200 meters are sandy loam and sandy clay loam in texture respectively. The bulk density is rather constant throughout the study area, averaging 1.27 g/cc. The significance of customized soil management strategies in mountainous areas is highlighted by this research, which advances our understanding of the dynamic link between topography and soil characteristics. The results highlight the significance of taking into account the spatial distribution of soil qualities in varied landscapes and offer insightful information for sustainable land use planning and agricultural practices.
