Abstract

Underground Tunnelling has always been daunting when it comes to some of the oldest and busiest cities of the world. A lot of challenges await the construction team starting from the soil diversity to selection of most appropriate TBM's, maintaining safety of existing structures and residents of the area being the topmost priority. In the present scenario, demand of Tunnel Boring Machines has suddenly increased worldwide to construct the Metro tunnels in Metropolitan cities, but issues related to vibrations caused by use of TBMs to nearby structures have been a matter of concern. TBM sometime based upon the soil profile are the source of vibrations that causes distortion due to its impact and displacements of material under the foundation of structures.
