The Surat city, also known as Diamond/ Silk city is located at 21.18°N72.83°E with 21.195 Latitude and 72.8194 Longitude. Surat's high population growth rate, coupled with high economic growth rate has resulted in an ever-increasing demand for transport creating excessive pressure on the existent transport system. The intercity traffic volumes in Surat necessitated a full-fledged integrated multi model mass rapid passenger system. The DPR for Surat Metro Rail project incorporates provisions such as comprehensive mobility plan (CMP), alternative analysis, last mile connectivity, transit-oriented development (TOD), value capture finance (VCF), property development (PD), public private partnership (PPP), unified metropolitan transport authority (UTMA) etc. The Phase-1 of the project comprises of Two corridors with a route of 40.35 Km encompassing 6.47 Km of Underground (Six UG Stations) and 33.48 Kms of Elevated (32 Stations) stretch. While the construction of Surat Metro Rail Project is in full swing, this paper describes the Underground construction (Underground Stations and Tunnelling) being carried out in the City and Challenges faced and Mitigations measures adopted in the process so-far.
