The paper describes the grouting philosophy employed during construction of a large underground crude storage project. The basic principle of storage of crude oil in underground unlined rock cavern is hydraulic confinement. The paper deliberates the hydrogeological criteria required for the containment of the stored crude and the associated seepage problems and grouting challenges. The observational approach for grouting along with risk management was employed for the successful execution of the project and the same is detailed in this paper.
