Incidence of Common Helminth Parasites in Goats and Sheep in Ghatampur Area of Kanpur Dehat

Abstract

A parasitic investigation carried out in 240 goats and 240 sheep of aged 2 year all in Ghatampur area of Kanpur, U.P. during the period from Feb. 2000 to Feb. 2005 has revealed the presence of Moniezia sp., Avitellina sp., Trichuris sp., Fasciola sp., Strongyloides sp., Haemonchus sp., Oesophagostomum sp., Dirocoelium sp. and Stilesia species. Out of 240 goats a total 50.41% and out of 240 sheep a total 53.33% were positive for these parasites. Moniezia sp. (11.25%), Avitellina sp. (7.50%), Trichuris sp. (7.50%), Fasciola gigantica (5.4%), Strongyloides papillous (5.41%), Haemonchus contortus (4.16%), Oesophagostommum sp. (3.75%), Dicrocoelium dentriticum (2.91%) and Stilesia vitatta (2.50%) were noted in goats but in sheep Moniezia sp. (11.66%), Avitellina sp. (8.75%), Fasciola sp. (6.25%), Trichuris sp. (6.25%), Oesophagostomum sp. (5.41%), Haemonchus sp. (4.58%), Strongyloides sp. (4.16%), Dicrocoelium sp. (3.33%) and Stilesia sp. (2.91%) were noted. The incidence was highest in rainy season and lower in winter season but moderate in spring and summer season. Over all the rate of infection was much higher in sheep (53.33%) than goats (50.41%).
