Efficacy of Combined Action of Garlic Extract and Mint Oil Volatiles Against Rice-moth, Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

Abstract

Exposure of Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton) (Lepidoptera: pyralidae) eggs to the combined action of Garlic (Allium sativum) extract and Mint (Mentha sp.) oil volatiles for 3,6,12 or 24 hours causes a significant reduction of varying degree in eggs hatchability at 20,40,80 or 160μl volumes of both. Severe reduction, both in egg output and egg hatchability, occurred in this pest, when their larvae were exposed to 80 or 160 μl volume of extract and oil. It was observed that continuous exposure to the volatiles for 30 days has most significant effect than for first 15 days or from 16th day for 15 days. When freshly emerged male and females were exposed to the combined action of garlic extract and mint oil volatiles, for 3 hours, a significant reduction in eggs laid/egg hatchability were observed only at 160 μl volumes, while significant increase in egg yield/egg hatchability were noticed at 20, 40 and 80 μl volumes of the both. However, if the exposure period is increased for 6 hours, a significant reduction in egg yield/egg hatchability were observed at various volume of garlic extract and mint oil volatiles. Glycogen, total lipids, total protein and Total free amino acids level was reduced significantly, in testes and ovaries of adults following their exposure to the combined action of selected volatiles, emanating from 20, 40, 80 or 160 μl of volume.
