Genetic Variability, Heretability and Genetic Advance in Dry Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

Abstract

The present study was carried out to elucidate the various parameters of genetic variability, the nature of interrelationships among various traits affecting yield. Thirty five genotypes of common bean were evaluated in field trials with three replications using RBD. The analysis of variability parameters revealed presence of substantial variability for all traits in all the genotypes used in the experiment. Highest genotypic and phenotypic variations were observed for, days to maturity and pod length respectively. All the characters showed high heritability with high genetic advance. Grain yield was found to be positively correlated with number of pods plant−1,pod length, number of seeds pod−1, and 100 seed weight. Path coefficient analysis revealed the importance of plant height, pods plant−1, pod length, seeds pod−1 and 100- seed weight as the major yield components in this crop.
