A case control study was undertaken to find out a possible relationship of ABO blood groups with serum triglyerides (TGs), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C) and the level of oxidative stress in 60 patients with essential hypertension (SBP ≥140, DBP ≥90) of age group between (45–65 years) which were compared with 60 normal healthy controls. The results showed significantly elevated levels serum TGs, TC, LDL-C and VLDL-C and lipid peroxide (LPO) content in patients with antigen A and B (B+AB) along with decreased levels of HDL-C. A significant positive correlation between serum TGs and TC with LPO was observed in group A (r=0.62, P<0.01; r=+0.52., P<0.05),B (r=+0.28, P<0.10;r=+0.46, P<0.05) and AB patients (r =+0.18, P<0.10; r=+0.28, P<0.10). The study emphasizes that the patients with blood group A, B and AB are more susceptible to oxidative stress compared to that of group O due to the presence of specific carbohydrate molecules on the red cell antigens of blood group A&B which may impair the metebolism of lipids inblood. Elevated blood pressure and rapid blood flow may increase the lipid oxidation and peroxidation reactions resulting in increased oxidative stress in them.
