Abstract

The occurrence of diverse crops and microbes in Assam indicate the potential existence of algal diversity in this region. However, reports on the occurrence and diversity of the algae resources in this region are very scarce. Although algae have received significant interest due to their pivotal role in agriculture, environment and industry, relatively little is known about the existence and extent of algal diversity in Assam. Keeping this in mind, a study was undertaken to document the diversity of algae occurring in Dhemaji district of Assam. A total no. fifty nine species belonging to Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and Xanthophyceae families were documented. Chlorella species was most frequently encountered during the study.
