‘Green Revolution'based on dwarf HYV of rice-wheat coupled with high input use provide the food security to India has reached a plateau and sustained with diminishing return of falling dividends which needs modification through green manure (cover crop grown mainly to add nutrients and organic matter to soil) of summer crop of sisbania or mungbean with short vegetation duration which recorded high values of organic matter (70%), narrow C:N ratio with higher content of micro and macro elements and biomass (≃3000 kg/ha) and grain yield (≃600 kg/ha). However, SML 668 a leading summer mungbean variety cultivated in areas of RWCS is not found suitable for dual purpose of grain and green manure due to its poor biomass production. HKM 1 a promising summer mungbean genotype developed through selection from local land races collected from flood prone khaddar areas of river Yamuna of Haryana based on ideotype approaches has shown promises for suitability of dual purpose (≃1200 kg/ha seed yield and ≃6800 kg/ha dry matter). Therefore, HKM 1 (Haryana Kaul Munbean 1) with higher biomass, tall and semi-erect plant growth habit, near to determinate flowering and maturity, stay green characteristics, top pods bearing habit and resistant to MYMV shall prove to be the model and ideal mungbean ideotype for dual purpose (grain and green manure) for summer cultivation in the areas of RWCS in Indo-Gangatic Plains (IGL) and leads to significant reduction in use of chemical fertilizers and improve the conservation of natural resources particularly soil fertility and environmental degradation.
