Abstract

In the present investigation spatial and modular variability in phytosterol concentration were quantified in an important aphrodisiac plant Tribulus terrestris. The study revealed that variations in phytosterol concentration were brought by both spatial and modular factors as well as by their interaction. Among different modules leaf possessed highest concentration. Path analysis established various relationships of phytosterol with edhaphic, plant metabolites and biomass factors. Higher soil organic carbon and clay content were the most crucial factors for harvesting phytosterols in larger quantities. Habitat specific study indicates that older alluvial plains and piedmonts supports higher phytosterol concentration compared to younger alluvial plain and sandy plain habitats.
