Abstract

Cadmium (Cd) is an important environment pollutant having carcinogenic properties. This heavy metal poses serious threats to the animals and human beings. From the environment it enters into the animals and human bodies and destroyed the basic organs of the body including lungs, pancreas, testis, liver and kidney. Liver is the basic primary organs involved in the elimination of toxic effects and removal of wastes from the body. This organ is more prone to the adverse effects of this metal than any other organ. Cd causes oxidative stress and apoptosis which eventually lead to hepatocellular dysfunction. The review is to highlight the current data available regarding the Cd induced cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in apoptosis, necrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.
