Abstract

Niger, Guizotia abyssinica (cass) is an annual oilseed crop cultivated in India widely used for culinary as well as other purposes. The present study was conducted to study the variation in the esterase activity and protein during germination both in the shoot and root in the niger 66 variety. The seeds exhibited esterase activity with 1-naphthyl acetate during the whole germination period in shoot (inclusion of endosperm) and roots. A total of six bands of esterase activity were observed in the zymogram pattern during the germination of seeds of Niger. Amongst these bands 3 and 4 were visible significantly during the period of germination suggesting that these enzymes are actively involved in metabolism during germination.
