Abstract

Niger is grown as a kharif crop extensively on marginal and sub marginal lands in tribal areas on hill tops and slopes under rainfed conditions. The present investigation was undertaken to compare the esterase isozyme and the soluble protein pattern by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in seeds of both the Ethiopian and Indian genotypes. The results showed that the esterase isozyme bands of different Niger genotypes, both Indian and Ethiopian genotypes were almost similar except for two Indian varieties JNC-11 and ONS-150. Quantitative differences in the band intensity of the major band was observed in CHH-2, JNC-1 and No 71 REC varieties. Protein content per gm tissue of the Ethiopian varieties is less compared to Indian genotypes.
