Bacterial Surveillance Associated with Water from River Ganga

Abstract

In the study water samples were studied for different bacterial load in Ganga River, from Kanpur, Allahabad and Varanasi at the site of upstream and downstream. Out of total 24 water samples 96 isolates were found. 18 & 20 isolates were found in upstream and downstream Kanpur Ganga water 14 and 19 isolates were found in upstream and downstream Allahabad Ganga water and 11 & 15 isolates were found in upstream and downstream Varanasi Ganga water. Highest bacterial load was found in Ganga water of downstream of Kanpur. The isolates were identified on the basis of morphological and biochemical characteristics and found belonging to different genera including Bacillus sp., Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhi.
