Abstract

Twenty one F1 hybrids obtained by crossing seven genetically diverse parents in a half diallel mating design were used to generate information on gene action, combining ability and heterosis in mungbean. The highest heterosis to the extent of 56.76% over better parent for seed yield per plant was observed in the cross Rm-10-509 x GBM-1, which also exhibited high heterosis (%) for harvest index and water absorption capacity. The mean squares for gca and sca were highly significant for all the characters, indicating the importance of both additive and non additive types of gene action. However, the ratio of GCA/SCA suggested the preponderance of non additive gene action in the expression of these traits. The best combiners were Co-4 for seed yield, harvest index and water absorption capacity; GBM-1 for seed yield, harvest indexand protein content while Rm-10-509 for protein content. The best specific combination were Rm-10-503 x CO-4 for seed yield per plant and showed desirable sca effect for harvest index and protein content and Rm-10-509 x GBM-1 for seed yield per plant, harvest index and water absorption capacity.
