Rooting Performance of Vitex negundo L. as Influenced by Growth Regulators and Nodal Cutting

Abstract

A study on the vegetative propagation of Vitex negundo L. was carried out at the Department of Horticulture, UAS, Bengaluru during 2010–2011. In the present experiment, the effect of growth regulators viz., IBA and NAA singly and in combinations on rooting of hardwood cuttings was studied. The treatments comprised of control, IBA at 2000 and 3000ppm, NAA at 2000 and 3000ppm, IBA+NAA 2000ppm each and IBA+NAA 3000ppm each and keradix. The experiment was conducted in a four replicated FCRD. Single, double and triple node hardwood cuttings were treated with the growth regulator solutions. Observations were recorded. The shoot parameters such as days taken to sprout, number of sprouts, length of longest sprout and fresh and dry weights of sprouts (9days, 3.23, 20.38cm, 3.6g and 0.88g, respectively) and the root parameters like time taken to root, number of roots, length of longest root, fresh and dry weights of roots were significantly higher (30days, 19.05, 21.75cm, 2.37g and 0.67g, respectively) in three node stemcuttings treated with IBA 3000ppm. The results of this investigation clearly brought out that, triple node hardwood cuttings should be treated with 3000ppmIBA to obtain maximum rooting and also for obtaining maximum survival of rooted cuttings in secondary nursery.
