Pollinator Fauna and Foraging Activity of Honeybees on Bunny BG-II Cotton
Abstract
The present investigations were carried out on the farmer's field at Govanakoppa village under Bailahongal taluk in Belgum district. Eight species of pollinators were recorded among these, seven species belonged to the order Hymenoptera and one belonged to the order Diptera. Of the eight species honey bees were predominant. Apis cerana F., A. florea F. and A. dorsata F. constituted 33.41, 32.13, and 25.47 per cent of total pollinators. Foraging activity of A. dorsata was uniform throughout the day and during the entire flowering period (7 th to 42 nd days after flowering). Activity of A. cerana and A. florea was also uniform but significantly higher numbers of A. cerana and A. florea bees (0.26 and 0.24 bees/10m2/5min) were observed at 1330 h. So the conservation of pollinators and use of honey bee colonies will play efficient role in enhancing the yield. These results reveal that BG-II cotton expressing Cry 1Ab and Cry 1 Ac gene, do not hinder the activity of honey bees.
