Abstract

Ralstonia solanacearum is a soil-borne gram-negative bacterium that causes bacterial wilt disease in brinjal (Egg plant). The Exopolysaccharide (EPS) produced by the pathogen protect the bacterial cell both from desiccation and aggression by hydrophobic toxic molecules. The EPS interfering directly with normal fluid movement of the plant, or by breaking the vessels due to hydrostatic overpressure. In R. solanacearum, EPS is thought to be the main factor accounting for the virulence of the pathogen. Nutrient agar medium favours the highest EPS production by RSM2 R. Solanacearum strain followed by LB agar medium (9.2 and 5.4 mg/ml media d.wt). EPS produced by RSM2 has 12% protein, 17% charbohydrate, 0.91% sulphates and 5.20% lipids.
