An Economic Analysis of Production of Chickpea in Bemetara District of Chhattisgarh

The study aims to examine the economics of chickpea production at different size of farms in Bemetara district of Chhattisgarh. The survey for this purpose was conducted in two blocks of Bemetara district of Chhattisgarh. Primary data were collected from 60 farmers from six villages of two blocks through personal interview method with the help of prestructured schedule for the year 2013–14. Study revealed that the average cost of cultivation of chickpeawas estimated to be Rs. 10974.8 per hectare and shows increasing trend with the increase in farm sizes. The average yield was observed to be 12.57 quintals per hectare. Highest yield was found at large farms i.e. 15 quintals per hectare across the different farms. The gross return from chickpea crop was observed as Rs. 40972.5 per hectare. The average cost of production was calculated as Rs. 803.57 per quintal. The average net income per hectare was observed to be Rs.29997.7. Highest net income was observed at large farms i.e. Rs. 37413.09 per hectare. The input- output ratio was observed 1:3.73. Production performance of chickpea (during 2000–01 to 2012–13) was observed positive and significant growth in Bemetara district as well as Chhattisgarh state. This was mainly due to positive and significant growth in area and production of chickpea. The production of chickpea increased from 540 thousand tonnes in 2000–01 to 974 thousand tonnes in 2011–12, registering a significant growth rate of 11.9 per cent per annum in Bemetara district.
