Utilization of Male Sterility for Hybrid Seed Production in Vegetables

Abstract

Male sterility in vegetables is commercially utilized to develop hybrids and substantial progress has been made in understanding the mechanism of male sterility. This review describes different types of male sterility, three line and two line hybrid breeding approaches involving CMS and EGMS lines, respectively are outlined. Genic male sterility has been successfully exploited to develop the Chilli hybrids CH1 and CH 3 and two musk melon hybrids Punjab Hybrid and Punjab Anmol. Cabbage hybrids H-64 & KCH-4 and PusaVasudha of carrot are developed by utilizing cytoplasmic male sterility. Cytoplasmic genic male sterility has been successfully utilized to develop chilli hybrids KashiSurkh, Kashi Early, Arka Meghana, Arka Harita and Arka Sweta and onion hybrids Arka Lalima and Arka Kirtiman.
