Genetic Variability Studies for Yield and Yield Components in Mutant Populations of Mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek)

Abstract

A study was carried out to investigate the yield and yield components of isolated mutants of a three mungbean varieties namely Co 5, Co(Gg) 7 and VBN(Gg) 3 in M4 generation. The results indicated that the phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) washigher than its genotypic counterpart (GCV) for all the studied traits and the differences between PCV and GCV for the all characters were very less. High heritability (broad) along with high genetic advance in percent of mean was observed for plant height,number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, 100 seed weight and single plant yield in all the three varieties except plant height in the variety Co 5 which indicating these characters would be best for phenotypic selection. The increased genetic variability in treated population for these traits has a high scope for selection and can be exploited for the further improvement of mungbean.
