Sustainability of Ginger Cultivation under Different Land Holding Systerms

Ginger is one of the earliest known oriental spices and is being cultivated in India for both as fresh vegetable and as a dried spice, since time immemorial. Present study was undertaken to examine the sustainability of owner cultivated ginger and leased-in cultivated ginger using sustainability index. Primary data was collected from 80 farmers cultivating Owner cultivated and leased-in cultivated ginger in Mysore district. It could be observed that the mean sustainability index of owner cultivated ginger farmers was 0.26 whereas it was 0.28 in case of leased-in ginger farmers. The difference between the two mean sustainability indices was found to be not significant and also it could be observed that 25 per cent of owner cultivated ginger farmers and 30 per cent of leased-in farmers were in low sustainability group. Further, it was noticed that 45 per cent of leased-in ginger farmers and 32.5 per cent of the owner cultivated ginger farmers were in medium sustainability group. Finally, about 25 per cent of the owner cultivated ginger farmers and leased-in ginger found place in high sustainability group.
