Abstract

The seed germination behavior and morphological characters of seed plays a significant role in the growth, development and quality of seedlings in slow growing species like Buchanania lanzan (Chironji), which is an important minor fruit tree species found in the central India. It produces highly nutritious and costly kernels which is used as a dry fruit. Present study was done to generate the information regarding its germination behavior and morphological characteristics of Chironji fruit, seed and seedlings. The outcome of the study revealed that its seed is small in size measured about 9.82 mm in diameter and 6.37 mm in thickness. After applying pretreatment method, 90% and 48% seeds were germinated in nursery and laboratory condition, respectively. Most of the seed germination occurs during 10–20 days after sowing. After one year of showing seedling showed 21 cm average shoot length and 29 cm average root length. Root- shoot ratio was also found more which indicates that it has more root growth than the shoot growth. Therefore, above information will be help full for deciding the proper nursery techniques of Chironji seedling production.
