Abstract

The present study highlights the advantages and benefits of agro biodiversity as perceived by the Irulars in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu. They have continuously being used and get benefited from agro biodiversity.

The list of tribal respondents from the selected village was obtained from the Horticulture department. A sample size of 100 tribal respondents was fixed for the study. The technique proportionate random sampling was followed for the selection of respondents from three habitations from Nilgiris district viz., kunjappanai, mantharai and thuthikarai. The information on targeted topic was collected by Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and personal interview.

A total of 16 major advantages and benefits of agrobiodiversity as perceived by the tribes were gathered at various dimension and it was pooled as multiple responses and the result were documented and discussed in percentage analysis.

This type of studies may help the policy makers and extension agents on agro biodiversity conservation in tribal areas.
