Abstract

The potential for biological methane generating from the manure of laying hens was investigated in the Laboratory. Fresh manure was collected and the characteristics were analyzed. The poultry litter had the calorific value of 14 GJ/tonne. Biogas production from litter was determined by bottling method with 3 replications of three treatments. Biogas production was found to be maximum in poultry litter than cow dung. The biogas production from poultry litter was worked to be 0.058 m3 per kg with 66 per cent methane content. It is found that to generate one unit of electricity, 18 kg of poultry litter is required.
