Fourty genotypes of tobacco (Nicotiana rustica L.) studied for variability parameters during 2012–13. The analysis of variance revealed significant differences for all the characters studied. The genetic variance contributed major proportion of total variance for all characters suggesting that these characters are under genetic control. The high genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation were observed for cured leaf yield, days to flowering and number of leaves per plant, while these estimates were moderate for days to maturity, leaf length, leaf width and reducing sugar content. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percent of mean were observed for all the characters indicating better response for improvement of these traits by effective selection programme.
