Abstract

A quantitative assessment of genetic diversity for eleven characters of blackgram has been worked out by Mahalanobis's D2 statistics. The studies included seventy six genotypes of blackgram obtained from different ecogeographical regions of India, which showed that there was a substantial genetic diversity between the genotypes with D2 values ranging from 8.24 to 77.79. Seventy six genotypes were grouped into fourteen clusters. The clustering pattern of the genotypes was independent of their geographical distribution. The hybridization programme has been suggested on the basis of inter cluster divergence and cluster means for the character studied. For creating a wide spectrum of variability intercrossing among the genotypes of cluster VIII and IX and cluster V (particularly better performing genotypesviz., NU-7, NU-8, NU-13, NU-29, NU-31, NU-34 and NU-38) is suggested.
